United Way is a national network of nearly 1,300 local organization that work to advance the common good by focusing on education, income and health. These are the building blocks for a good life: a quality education that leads to a stable job, enough income to support a family through retirement, and good health
United Way of America is the national organization dedicated to leading the United Way movement. Local United Ways create long-lasting community change by addressing the underlying causes of the most significant local issues. Common focus areas include helping children and youth achieve their potential, promoting financial stability and independence, and improving people’s health. Our goal is to create long-lasting changes by addressing the underlying causes of problems.
It takes everyone in the community working together to create a brighter future. So we bring together people from all across the community–government, business, faith groups, nonprofits, the labor movement, ordinary citizens–to tackle the issues. Because we all win when a child succeeds in school, when a family becomes financially stable, when people have good health.

It sets three bold goals for where the nation should be by 2018:
Diversity and Inclusion: A Statement of Principle
United Way of America will continually strive to be a model of diversity and inclusion. The United Way of America’s Board of Trustees, staff, and volunteers must reflect all of the many faces, and walks of life, which proudly make up our nation. Together we genuinely demonstrate the principles of diversity and inclusion which enrich all communities.
To value diversity is to respect and appreciate race, religion, skin color, gender, nationality, sexual orientation, gender identity, physical abilities, age, parental status, work and behavioral styles and the perspectives of each individual shaped by their nation and experiences.
To be inclusive is to leverage diversity by bringing together unique individual backgrounds to collectively and more effectively address the issues facing our communities.
It is our aim, therefore, that United Way of America’s partners, strategies, and investments reflect these core values. Diversity is a critical component to achieving success in an ever-changing environment. Everyday we experience the dramatic changes occurring in our country: changing demographics and changing needs. Our ability to employ effective inclusion practices and to make them an integral part of our business will enable United Way to fulfill its mission of improving lives by mobilizing the caring power of communities.

- Cut by half the number of working families that lackfinancial stability.
- Increase by one-third the percentage of healthy young people and adults.
